Definition
“All procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injuries to the female genital organs, for non-medical reasons.” (WHO, 2020)
Terminologies
Different terminologies are used to refer to the practice, including: FGM, FGM/C, Excision, Circumcision, Khatna, Sunnah, Suwugol, Bondo, etc. depending on the country, the language, and the ethnic group. It is important to use the terms your clients feel comfortable with.
